Today, I am speaking with Joesph Lemmens about his electric bike and how he decided to build it via a kit.
Some facts about his electric bike:
- Bike weighs about 55 lbs (including 15lbs for the front wheel with motor and 10lbs for the battery).
- Motor is 600 watt DC permanent magnetic motor
- It takes about 5 hours for the battery to fully charge from completely empty
- On full charge he rides 30-40 miles and uses about 1/2 charge on the battery cycling between 16-18 mph for two hours
- Lithium-Cobalt-Magnanese (LiNiCoMn) Battery is 400 watts / 40 volt X 10 amp hours / Battery cost about $400 new and he has had it 2 years
Electric bike components:
Motor (part of front wheel)
Controller (regulates voltage to motor)
Throttle
Amp Meter (shows how much energy is being used out of battery)
LiNiCoMn Battery Pack
Joesph explains some of the principles behind the electric bike's motor including:
- NiMH Rechargeable battery pack (24 V 4500mAh)
- Powered Intellegent Speed Controller (26V DC / 30 Amp max)
- Motor (24-48 V DC Eteck / 150 amp / 10 kw)
- Motor (36V DC 2500 RPM / 500 w output)
- Activator (24V DC 100 lbs load capacity)
- Vaccuum Motor (120 V AC or 120 V DC)

Joesph allowed me to take an 18 mile ride on his bike the other week and I was quite impressed. While the bike was much heavier than I am used to, it was really nice having the power to help me up big hills and I still got a great workout in too!
